CBN.com - The compulsion to drive a golf ball hard, whacking it half way to Timbuktu just because it feels so good is one of the most natural things to do on a golf course after a stressful week in the office.
Unfortunately, it's also one of the worst things to do for your golf score. And although most would profess that it is lack of good equipment that is to blame, I have come to realize that it is power out of control that is at least partially responsible for hooking, slicing, and sinking shots into bunkers -- a very bad game indeed.
Power undirected, power without aim, power without wisdom -- these are the things that get us as golfers and as Christians off track.
In the end it isn't how powerfully you play that counts; rather, it's how skillfully you control that power that gives you the advantage.
In the same manner, we will never be effective Christians on Christ's course if we continually depend on our initial strength and an immature display of showmanship to see us through.
If we will put our hand in God's and allow him to guide our swing through the fairways of our daily endeavors, we will gain the kind of strength that is honed, that is unruffled, that waits for the anointing of the Holy Spirit before driving, before moving. Power that is directed, power that has a vision, power that knows when to let up and slow down is exactly what is called for.
It might not seem as flashy or release the same adrenaline rush. It might not get others to take notice at first, but over the long haul, people will start asking what the secret is to your game, what gives you the cutting edge and keeps you out of the bunkers of life.
